  • Hanoi Girl-Canvas Floating Frame-White

    Hanoi Girl

    $268.14$813.59 inc. GST

I was casually wandering around the streets of Hanoi with my wife when I noticed this young girl on her bike. I instantly recognised it as a brilliant photo opportunity. She was literally going round and round the bowls and I found it fascinating how the contents of the house spilled out onto the street. It was as if an entire life was on display. The mother and father can be seen inside the house and the cat on the steps. By the way, the cat has two different colour eyes.

  • Edifice

    Edifice

    $268.14$813.59 inc. GST

This imposing building caught my eye as I was wandering around Ninh Binh in Vietnam. There was something about its shape that fascinated me. I noticed all the builders and thought that I had to capture it.

I didn’t want them to notice me taking the photo, as I thought it would ruin the integrity of the image. So I waited for a little while in front of the building and pretended to be disinterested. Looking the other way and occasionally taking a photo of something in the other direction. They eventually forgot that I was there and I was able to take the shot. It was very important to me to get the symmetry of the building right. I had to move my position several times until I was in the perfect place. I also needed something in for foreground to grab the viewer’s attention and give some life to the image. The boys on the bike provided that. At 1/80sec the shutter speed was fast enough to provide sharp detail in the people in the building but gave motion blur to the boys. Perfect.

A Nation Built From Courage and Sacrifice

    $268.14$813.59 inc. GST

It is easy to forget when we go about our daily lives, that the freedoms we enjoy have been built on the courage and sacrifice of others. This view of the Melbourne skyline from the Shrine Of Remembrance shows a person paying their respects at the Cenotaph and Eternal Flame. On the right, a soldier can be seen raising the Australian flag.

  • Aquae Sulis - Framed Canvas - White

    Aquae Sulis

    $268.14$813.59 inc. GST

A lone child, standing as still as a rock can be seen amidst the moving people and water around him. This image was exposed over 13 seconds and was captured at the annual Paddle Out For Whales held in Hervey Bay, Queensland. To me, the ethereal nature of the image perfectly captures the magic of childhood and the beauty of the world around us, if we only stop for a moment and take time to look.

  • Sky Tower From Auckland Harbour Bridge - Framed Canvas - White

Sky Tower From Auckland Harbour Bridge

    $268.14$813.59 inc. GST

SILVER AWARD – AUSTRALIAN PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS
It is always difficult to photograph iconic landmarks like the Sky Tower or Auckland Harbour Bridge when they have already been photographed so many times before. I never want to knowingly repeat what others have done. In this image, I went to the very end of the Auckland Harbour bridge where it just starts its journey over the water. Most photographers would probably choose not to go so close to the bridge as you don’t get an overall impression of the bridge itself, but I thought that this would give a unique perspective of Auckland city and the Sky Tower.

It was the middle of the day when I took the image. I usually prefer to shoot at dawn or dusk but on this occasion, I did not have a choice. Strong harsh shadows are not usually a photographer’s friend, but I used them to highlight the rigid structure of the bridge and contrasted it by using a “big stopper” filter to stop almost all the light from reaching the camera’s sensor. This ensured that the exposure took 20 seconds and gave the ocean a soft velvet appearance. I framed the tower between the arches of the bridge.

An unknown musician practices his guitar on the edge of the water of ‘The Rocks’ in Sydney. With just the ocean for his audience, perhaps his location, one of the most recognizable in the world, provides inspiration. Who knows, we may one day see him across the water, at the Sydney Opera House.

  • Three Little Birds - Floating Frame Canvas - White | Image by Michael Lees

    Three Little Birds

    $268.14$813.59 inc. GST

Sometimes we just need to get away from it all. Some People can go to extraordinary lengths to do that. The vastness of the Australian landscape often leaves me breathless. The seemingly endless sky allows us to disappear into ourselves. Freeing ourselves from the confines of our normal existence. But even though we can feel isolated and alone we are never truly on our own. If we just look to look around us and we will see that there are others there to help and guide us. This image is one of my all-time favorites. Many people who first view it often miss the fact that the pilot of the hang glider is not alone. Two small birds join him and the trio flies in perfect formation. I am often asked how I managed to capture this image. Was I following in a plane or helicopter behind? Were the birds specially trained to fly like that? The truth is a bit more humble than that. A case of being in the right place at the right time. I was on Mount Tamborine on the Gold Coast hinterland and shooting members of the Canungra Hang Gliding Club as they held took to the sky. I stood on the steep hillside and as the glider became airborne I stepped in behind. The two birds were startled by the sudden appearance of this huge contraption in their midst. They attempted to outrun the glider and inadvertently made this interesting formation, which I captured with my Canon 70-200mm. A second later, it was all over. The glider had moved away and the birds had gone their separate ways.

  • Tho Quot Co

    $268.14$813.59 inc. GST

Hanoi, Vietnam is a crazy place where the streets are filled with life. I loved being able to wander around and watch people go about their daily lives. Each street tends to be filled with shops of the same type and it is quite normal for the activity of the shop to spill out onto the pavement. I spotted this shop as I was wandering around and had to quickly take the shot before I was noticed. I wanted to capture, what is a normal and in many ways mundane activity in Vietnam, but to my western eyes, was beautifully chaotic. If I was spotted taking the shot I knew that the authenticity of the image would be compromised.
